Challenges:
1. Come up with a simple design in a short turnaround time of two weeks.
2. Quick & clear persistent navigation on a rugged tablet that supports Arabic and English content.
Observations from direct data gathering sessions:
1. The primary medium of communication between fire stations are usually mobile phones and they would like to stick on to this.
2. The fire fighters usually use big hand gloves which is part of their fire suites.
3. The device is roughly handled and needs to be online at all times.
4. The fighers need to quickly access relevant information.
5. It is difficult for the fire fighters to identify the type of fire and then look for relevant information on handling them.
6. The fire vehicles need to reach the emergency site in a short duration and also should be able to communicate the message clearly to near by vehicles.
Solutions provided:
1. Created a persistent navigation with relevant content directly accesible to the users in two taps. They can make VOIP calls from the tablet to communicate emergency responses
2. The buttons on the UI needs to be bigger for the fighter with gloves to tap.
3. The device have longer battery back up, so it cannot be a regular tablet.
4. The entire information is accessible to the users in less than two taps on the screen.
5. The systems needs to locate the fire through an alarm and provide information on which floor the fire is and also suggest evacuation plans to the fighters.
6. Used Google maps to provide shortest route and a self learning system that remembers more shorter routes.
7. Options to create incident reports for histories.
